A pool area is a part of the garden that has to be everything to everyone. It has to look gorgeous all year round, need virtually no maintenance and most importantly cope with the odd animal, child or big kid running into the garden beds, chasing the ball or frisbee. With the added problem of water splash, it is any wonder pool owners get daunted with the thought of establishing a garden around the pool and usually go for the easy option of paving and a few pots.
If you have a new pool garden or are renovating a tired old one, plant selection is the key. Go for plants that don?t drop many leaves or have large leaves that when they fall into the water are easy to scoop out, like the Magnolia Little Gem (Magnolia Grandiflora ?Little Gem?). The small leaves of fine foliage plants tend to block up filter systems, so steer clear of them.
Sand in the pool is a never ending problem and one of the keys to trying to minimise this problem is by mass planting and the use of good thick borders to keep the soil away for the pools edge or paving. Liriope Evergreen Giant (Liriope muscari ?Evergreen Giant?) is a tall growing variety to least 50cm and has dark green strappy foliage that if it happens to have a few heavy feet land on it, will spring back very nicely. They all grow in full sun or a part shaded position, and looks brilliant mass planted where you can?t see the soil for foliage.
Liriope muscari is a smaller growing variety and it is the perfect border plant for the edge of paving or paths.
