Spring Cleanup ? Making Mulch (Hansa Brush Chipper)

Episode: #7 14/10/2006
Presenter: Phil Dudman

There is nothing like a bit of pruning therapy and spring offers you loads of opportunity to satisfy your urge and give your garden a well deserved cleanup. The great thing about pruning is it helps to stimulate lots of healthy new growth so if you have any plants that are riddled with dead wood or disease, liberate them by chopping out all that offending growth.

When you are removing larger limbs it is always a good idea to do it in section so you don?t rip the bark. Make your final cut just beyond the point where the branch meets the trunk. That is where plants naturally callus over to heal and protect themselves.

Some plants flower on new growth and if you haven?t already then get out this weekend and prune your hibiscus so they bush up and reward you with lots of summer blooms. Other plants like pelargonium, geranium and salvia can go a trim too.

Keep an eye on all your winter and spring flowering plants and be ready to show them your secateurs when they are done. That goes for camellia and azalea as well as your natives like grevillea and bottlebrush. It keeps them healthy and compact giving you masses of blooms next year.

When there is lots of pruning to do, it pays to have decent tools. The latest offering from the Garden Guru's includes the multipurpose pair of short handle loppers, as well as the powerful long handle loppers for big cutting jobs. You will also find comfortable secateurs for finer work.

So what do you do with all the trimmings you have been pruning? Don?t waste time and money taking them to the tip. Just get yourself a gutsy machine that will turn all your garden waste into valuable compost and mulch.

Have a look at the powerful HANSA C7 Brush Chipper, it is just the thing for large gardens. It will process branches and prunings right up to 65mm thick and even those pesky palm leaves will be giving you endless amounts of free mulch and compost to feed your plants.

It is easy to start and simple to operate. The machine has a smooth, fast, self-feeding action that will discharge cleanly into a trailer or wheelbarrow or directly onto the garden or compost, so there is no double handling.

The great thing about Hansa Brush Chippers is that they are all Australian Made with no plastic parts so you know they have been built to last.

Don?t resist the urge to clean up your backyard any longer get out into your garden this weekend and make the most of this glorious season.
