Rain Tank Watering System
Episode: #2 17/03/07
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
You can have the garden of your dreams using less water, and thanks to some great Aussie innovations it is getting a lot easier. Holman industries are an Australian company at the forefront of high tech irrigation product development. Their latest idea is brilliant, a special low pressure watering system that runs off your rainwater tank.
Trevor predicts that if we continue on the drying trend that we are experiencing at present, in the next five years we will all be using rain water tanks to water our gardens. The trouble is we can not continue using sprinklers that can be wasteful. The future of irrigation is in direct delivery systems that deliver the water straight to the roots at soil level reducing evaporation.
How it works:
Setting a system up is easy, you need a special tap timer, because normally they turn on and off using water pressure but this operates at zero pressure which is brilliant for the rainwater tank watering system which is gravity pressured.
This means you do not need a pump as watering takes place directly from the tank and that saves energy bills!
The timer can operate at one minute intervals and at any particular day of the week allowing those who have restricted use to meet the requirements. Importantly it works with a Holman rain sensor that turns the system off if rain comes.
The water smart low pressure drip system is easily connected and run around your garden. You effectively lay it on the surface of the soil in garden beds and you can mulch over the pipe to hide it and further reduce evaporation out of the soil.
This is very smart watering and it allows you to use rainwater that would have ended up in stormwater drains in your garden. The results mean you can have the garden of your dreams with out wasting a drop or needing a pump to water your garden.
