What to Do in Queensland
Presenter: Phil Dudman
Episode: 24 (13th October 2007)
One of the most important things about the spring season is that it is the season when plants put on a lot of growth so as gardeners, it’s vital that we take full advantage of this precious moment by carrying out some must do jobs.
The first job is fertilising. Go around and feed anything you think needs a little kick along, an All Purpose Fertiliser is the best way to go, but just keep in mind to be careful with phosphorus sensitive plants like Grevilleas and Banksias. They’ll need a special fertiliser for natives, one that’s low in Phosphorous and always remember it’s important to water before and after you apply your fertiliser.
A lot of our lawns are looking a bit shabby after the dry and now is a perfect time to repair some of those bare patches.
Use a garden fork to aerate the soil first, then remove any weeds and rake the area to create a nice even surface. You can sow some fresh seed, or try transplanting some little plugs of turf from other parts of your lawn. Make sure you keep the area moist until it’s looking established.
It’s also time to give your potted plants a bit of attention too, a bit of trim, some fresh mix and a little fertiliser will do your plants a world of good. Re-potting an advanced plant can be a big job, so here’s a little trick.
Just use a trowel to remove small sections of the old mix from the sides of the pot and then replace the mix with a little slow release fertiliser and water crystals. It’s as good as a full service.
Now is a great time for pruning all those late winter and spring flowering shrubs like camellias, azaleas, grevilleas and bottlebrush.
When they’ve finished flowering give them a good trim up to about a third. Follow up with a deep drink and a feed and they’ll come back beautifully. A little effort like this will ensure your next show of flowers will be even more stunning.
