Presenter: Neville Passmore
Spring is a time of the year when many plants, come into flower and have a major growth spurt. Get the most out of your garden during the warmer weather with Neville's handy fertilising tips.
Neville's Tips and Facts
- To fuel that activity it's important to feed your garden from top to bottom. Before you empty the shed of fertiliser and throw it around willy-nilly there is a new thinking happening on the plant-feeding front, particularly in WA with our impoverished sandy soils.
- Try Shades of Green Garden Blend Fertiliser, it's an all-purpose plant food that is leading the new thinking for a number of reasons. It is microbe friendly so that when you apply it to your roses and other shrubs, the living organisms in the soil break it down are working in top gear, so plants can absorb the nutrients through their roots.
- Fertilisers that are highly soluble or over applied can miss their target and go underground below the reach of the roots. Because of the nature of our sandy soils underground water moves these dissolved plant foods towards our lakes and rivers leading to seasonal problems with algal blooms.
- Shades of Green is slow to release its nutrients as some parts are almost insoluble, so this is not a quick fix.
- It contains a smorgasbord of over 60 different nutrients and trace elements but the odd thing is that plants need only about a third of these for growth, so why the extras? The answer lies in our nutritional needs that are not being met by much of the industrially grown food we eat, simply because its lacks the full range of vitamins and minerals our bodies need.
- When we apply this fertiliser to our fruiting trees and our vegetables, they are able to take up elements like selenium, cobalt, zinc and copper and deliver it to us in fruit or vegetables. This is far more effective than taking supplements in the form of pills and capsules.
