Story Title: Community Gardens
Episode 3: WA's Great Gardens
Date: 17 October 2010
Presenter: Neville Passmore
Community Gardens provide a great source of fresh produce, plants, a sense of community and connection to the environment.
Joondanna Community Food Gardens
- The Joondanna Community Food Garden was established in 2009 by a group of local residents in partnership with the City of Stirling and aims to provide a welcoming, creative and safe place for local residents to gather and grow fresh organic food, share stories and knowledge about gardening and sustainable living.
- The project has been designed and managed by a volunteer group of residents and on weekends there is a real buzz about the place.
- It provides access to healthy food and is a true demonstration of a community working together to improve a neighbourhood.
Neville's Planting Tip
- Planting a strawberry patch not only provides super food berries, but a great variety of white, pink and red flowers ideal for edging and decorating your garden beds.
- Available from local garden centres, strawberry plants provide high quality sweet succulent fruit.
- The flowers have ornamental qualities particularly when grown in hanging baskets and pots.
- Plant about 30 centimetres apart and mulch ideally with straw to keep the fruits dry and protected from snails, slugs and slaters. If birds are a problem then a light net can be handy.
