  • Plant selection is crucial for waterwise gardens and now is a good time to look at replacing a few plants that are not only water conscious but also low maintenance.
  • Visit a waterwise accredited garden centre such as Waldecks on vine, you can get great advice on waterwise choices as well as lots of suitable plants.
  • Aussie natives are a good place to start as they have been here for a few million years and many really have the hang of existing in a dry environment.
  • Kangaroo paws can get by with 10mm of water on one standard drink per week.
  • Succulents are the ultimate waterwise plant, they store moisture in their tissues which means they can survive summer without sprinklers at all, once set up.
  • Mediterranean plants are well suited as they perform well is a similar climate to Perth. Try Pride of Madiera which come from the Canary islands and once in flower are a buzz.
  • You can even have a tropical garden with the right plant selection, try Regal Ruby Brazilian Jasmine, they have beautiful colours and make great climbing plants for fences.
