There is no doubt that Perth is feeling the pinch when it comes to water and we are one of the fastest drying parts on the planet and so water is quickly becoming one of our most precious assets. Fortunately, the Water Cooperation has a plan to secure the water future.

  • They have 3 pillars; one is to reduce water use, find new sources and to increase recycling.  In our homes, one of the greatest opportunities is literally going down the drain.
  • If you look at the average home, we have massive opportunities to reuse water that’s in the laundry, bath and shower and we call it called grey water. We produce 200 to 300 litres a day, 100 thousand litres per year - all perfectly suited for the garden.
  • You can put a bucket in the shower or you can capture the water when you are washing veggies but remember that it is technically waste water so it could be contaminated, thus be very careful using it. You can use it on the garden but just avoid areas like the lawn or other high traffic areas or we can get ourselves s nifty grey water system.
  • A grey water system gives a full day’s worth of watering once a week through summer which can reduce the impact by 30%.
  • To get the best out of the grey water system, there are a couple of steps to follow. Grey water is only as good as the products you use so go for environmentally friendly products and liquids tend to be best. It is good to rotate the grey water through the garden and this means you spread it out and not just dumping it on the same spot.
  • The purple pipe is a special drip irrigation designed for grey water and it’s actually a legal requirement to use this type of irrigation for grey water. A fancy grey water system can be fully installed for a lot less than you think so check with the Water Unit of the WA Health Department for details of suppliers and requirements.
  • A carefully installed and managed grey water system is going to make a profound difference to help you secure water for your garden this summer.
