A healthy, well-managed lawn adds a great deal to a garden. Lawns provide a cooling buffer to the hardscapes features and will act as a natural air conditioner during hot weather.
- The most pressing maintenance requirement of any lawn is mowing and the key to mowing is consistency. Mowing should be done on a regular basis so no more than a third of the leaf height needs to be removed at any one cut.
- Some lawns will also require de-thatching, a process where a large amount of old, dense foliage or thatch is removed, taking the lawn done to virtually the root system, done once every 2 to 3 years. This will allow for better water penetration and can help prevent some fungal diseases.
- The lawn irrigation system needs to be managed to suit the climatic and seasonal conditions. The best time to water is in the morning, allowing the water to soak into the soil and be available to the lawn during the warmth of the day. Remember watering is only allowed once on each of your rostered watering days, either before 9am or after 6pm.
- A lawn wetting agent should by applied 3 times a year, in early spring, early summer and autumn to get the best out of water. It will overcome any water repellency and allow the water to soak into the soil where needed.
- Healthy lawns need to be fed a complete controlled release lawn fertilizer every two months during the warmer weather. Always follow the manufacturer’s application instructions and never over fertilize. Excessive fertilizer can end up in our water ways and cause all sorts of problems and it's simply a waste of money.
- Regular and targeted maintenance will keep a lawn growing well and looking great while using minimal water and fertilizer. For more great information for getting the best out of your lawn, visit the Water Corporation website.
