Most kids love pizza, so if you’re looking for an outdoor project to get the kids off the couch and out into the garden, then why not grow your own pizza pots.
- Start with rightly coloured lightweight pots that the kids will love, then fill them with different garden grown ingredients that you might find on a pizza.
- In spring, we get all of our warm season vegie seedlings in the ground so there is a big menu of plants to choose from.
- You’ll need some premium potting mix too – so the plants perform well - and if you can get your hands on some kids gloves and some pint-sized tools to make the project more fun.
- Now plant a mix of your favourite pizza toppings. What would a pizza be without fresh tomato. As far as flavour goes the heirloom ‘Tommy Toe’ is one of the best – a sweet cherry style tomato. So good straight from the vine – make sure you leave some for the pizzas.
- You’ll also want to include some sweet peppers or Capsicum. This is a variety called ‘Sweet Stuff’ with mini-bell shaped capsicums that mature from green to a glossy red. You could roast them and make a ham, pineapple and capsicum pizza.
- Don’t forget to grow some pizza herbs too like basil, thyme and oregano – which are great for margarita pizza and a bit of fresh parsley too.
- Remember vegies like lots of sunshine, so put your pizza pots in a sunny spot and water and liquid feed regularly to promote a good crop. When it’s time to pick, host your own pizza party!
