Native to tropical America, anthuriums make for fantastic house plants, requiring very little attention to keep them looking beautiful.

• You need a decently sized pot – when replanting, make sure to get a pot at least 2 sizes bigger than the current one.
• It is important to use a quality potting mix, with slow release fertilisers, wetting agents and a red tick on the bag.
• When it comes to potting, you can mix in a little bit of mulch with the potting mix to give the soil even better drainage, or you can use horticultural charcoal at the base of the pot.
• Having good drainage is key to growing these successfully as an indoor plant.
• While the plants are very adaptable, they are tropical plants, and dislike frost and cold winter weather.
• Once topped up with a slow release fertiliser, give your plant a deep soak. Make sure you don’t overwater in the cooler months of the year – allow the soil to dry out completely in between watering.
• Keep an eye out for any old foliage or flowers that have turned brown. Chop them off to keep the plant flourishing.
• Keep the plants in a well-lit room, away from direct sunlight – they can tolerate low light levels, but you will be sacrificing the chance of stunning flowers.
