Carnarvon Bananas
Story: Growing Innovation - Carnarvon Bananas
Episode: 12
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 3rd June
Trevor makes his way up to Carnarvon to find out a little more about how they utilise Troforte to create fresher, sweeter, longer lasting bananas.
- The Sweeter Banana Co-operative has been working in conjunction with Field Capacity in the development of a regenerative farming system utilising minerals, microbes and controlled release fertiliser formats.
- The practices being implemented have been adapted from research completed in broadacre agriculture and are now represented across the full range of fruit and vegetable crops produced in Carnarvon.
- The Biomineral production system has significantly reduced the use of synthetic features resulting in increased profitability, soil health and fruit quality. In some instances, growers have been able to reduce fertiliser rates by more than 50% without negative impact.
- Field Capacity and Sweeter Banana are participating in a research project with the University of Western Australia to assess the performance of the Biomineral production system in comparison with conventional practices, and to continue making improvements.
