Rayne shows us how you can create your very own hanging kokedama.
- Kokedama is a traditional Japanese gardening technique, involving creating hanging moss balls with plants. The process involves wrapping an entire plant root ball with a mixture of clay and soil, with a layer of moss serving as a natural container for the plant’s root.
- You will need: water, soil, dried sphagnum moss, string or twine, scissors, floral wire and a plant!
- Wet the soil and soak the sphagnum moss in water.
- Shape the soil into a ball, and place it around the roots of your plant.
- Firm it up, compacting it as much as possible until a ball shape forms.
- Wrap the thread around the ball of soil multiple times to enhance the round ball shape. Cut it off and tuck in the excess.
- Grab your floral wire, twisting the bottom into a spiral for the base of the kokedama. Push the wire up through the centre of the base until it pops out of the top. Bend that down, form a loop and piece the remainder back into the ball. This will act as your loop for the string to hang the plant.
- Finish with the string or twine, wrapping it around to create a decorative effect, and to cover the entire ball.
- To water, take a bowl of water and submerge the bottom of the ball into the water for around 10-15 minutes.
