Hanging baskets - designing, do's and don'ts.
- The 1980s have fond memories of footy, biking, and the Commodore 64, but let's not forget the iconic hanging baskets!
- Hanging baskets are back and better than ever, adding drama, whimsy, and movement to any garden with ease.
- Choose a premium potting mix that meets Australian standards, incorporating wetting agents and controlled-release fertilizer for optimal plant health.
- Assess the location carefully, considering sun and wind exposure, and select plant varieties suited to the conditions - like ferns for shade and succulents for hot, dry areas.
- Opt for plants that cascade down the sides for a stunning visual impact, such as "String of Pearls" succulents, variegated "Pothos," and classic "Spider Plants."
- Fuchsias are perfect for flowering baskets, offering a wide range of colours and long blooming periods, while "Pitcher Plants" add intrigue and beauty as conversation starters.
- Regular maintenance is key, including liquid fertilizer, wetting agent, and seaweed solution application, as well as occasional repotting into larger baskets every 2 to 3 years.
- With a little attention, hanging baskets bring back the charm of the 80s while enhancing gardens everywhere.
