Bonnie advises with the right tools and techniques, you can achieve beautiful, well-shaped hedges and shrubs that enhance the aesthetics of your garden!
- Hedge trimming and topiarising are among the most satisfying gardening jobs, especially as spring arrives and your hedges have begun to grow. It's the perfect time to shape your plants for a neat appearance.
- When it comes to hedge trimming, you have two main options: electric hedge trimmers and shears. For smaller hedges and shrubs, shears—like the Darlac Tri-blade—are highly recommended. They provide a more natural finish and do not shred leaves like trimmers can.
- Using shears is akin to sculpting. It’s important to work slowly and carefully, removing only a little at a time. Regularly stepping back to evaluate your progress helps avoid mistakes. The Darlac Tri-blade features three cutting blades, allowing you to cut twice the amount with each stroke, enhancing efficiency.
- The central chrome-armoured and heat-treated blade remains static, providing a focus point for the outer blades. This design improves accuracy, resulting in cleaner cuts and a more polished look for your shrubs.
- For taller shrubs, telescopic shears are invaluable. With adjustable handles ranging from 670mm to 880mm, they ensure comfortable use and help prevent back strain. Shock-absorbing buffers reduce jarring, while wavy blades trap growth effectively. A Teflon coating on the blades reduces friction, making it easier to cut through green and light woody growth.
- After shaping your shrubs or hedges, use a blower to clear away cuttings, preventing dead bits from spoiling the appearance. Use secateurs to tidy up any remaining stray growth. If necessary, apply fertiliser to promote healthy regrowth.
- Cleaning your shears after use is essential for longevity. The PTFE non-stick coating on the outer blades reduces friction and helps prevent rust. Keeping your tools in top condition ensures they remain effective for future projects and enhances the satisfaction of your gardening experience!
