Hydroponics on Christmas Island
Story: Hydroponics on Christmas Island
Episode: 13
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 7 June 2025
Trevor visits Christmas Island to explore an exciting initiative called Green Space Tech Urban Farm.
- Christmas Island relies almost entirely on fresh produce flown in from mainland Australia—making it costly and often poor in quality.
- PRL Group, active in resources, energy, agri-business, and logistics, is investing in local solutions to boost food security and community wellbeing.
- Launched in 2022 with PRL funding and a government grant, this agritech initiative uses hydroponic greenhouses and climate-controlled propagation to grow high-quality salad greens, Asian greens, and herbs.
- Greenspace 1 supplies select local retailers and restaurants, with aspirations to expand production and range, eventually supporting the entire Christmas Island community.
- Building on early success, Greenspace 2 will roll out in three phases—aimed at scaling production, adding new crops like vegetables and fruit, and creating jobs, eco-tourism options, and a community café.
- The program not only reduces reliance on imported food but also lowers carbon emissions, supports local employment, and encourages sustainable agriculture on the island.
