Ryobi Hedge Trimmer
Episode: #7 14/10/2006 Presenter: Neville Passmore
The best hedges have a good cover of foliage without gaps and bare bases. One of the factors in achieving the appearance is choosing the right plant. Small leaf plants are generally best.
The humble hedge has come a long way so now you could look at them as a frame for a small garden or an aesthetic feature for a formal garden.
Hedges were originally cultivated as living fences to keep stock corralled in a certain area and wild animals. However the privacy offered by tall hedges made them of interest to homeowners.
The second factor is regular trimming to encourage thick re-growth. You can trim with pretty much any cutting tool but secateurs for example will drive you nuts because there are so many cuts involved.
Mechanical trimmers like the Ryobi Hedge Trimmer will take all the drudgery out of hedge pruning and it becomes a real pleasure.
With a 27mm wide cutting mouth which allows larger stems to be cut and a 600 watt engine, it means it is strong enough to get through thick bits of wood with ease.
It actually works extremely well also with finer stems and cuts the time to trim the hedge by as much as ?.
The best way to tackle the job is to stroke the hedge in a window wiper fashion side to side. This way you only take off a fine shim at a time and this avoids gouging which can make the hedge look a bit crook. Fortunately even a bad haircut grows out eventually so don?t allow yourself to get too upset if it goes wrong.
Safety is always a major concern with any power equipment and the model comes with an electric chain brake that instantly stops the blades moving when pressure is released from the trigger.
Also, a blue light lets you know the power is switched on. Working with the cord over your shoulder is a good tip so you can see where it is at all times.
When you change angles, the Ryobi trimmer has a rotating handle which makes it easy to work because you can maintain the same grip and this helps to make the operation safer too.
