Darren heads to a specialist garden centre, Coast Road Palms, to look for Palms and Cycads. The nursery owners show us the best ways to select, plant and grow these beauties to ensure they survive and prosper with as little water and maintenance as possible.

• At Coast Road palms they have around 700 species over Palms and Cycads each 30 years old.

• Cycads are an ancient group of plants that hark back to dinosaur times. They grow in a variety of conditions and are sure to add a wow factor to any garden.

• Although very tropical plants it is important to water them in a way to use as little water as possible. It’s important to select the right spot and develop the soil correctly for each individual plant.

• By planting a palm deeper and using old palm plants in the mulch they can survive off being watered only once or twice a week.
