Autumn Fruits

Story: Autumn Fruits
Episode: Episode 12
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 14th May 2022

  • As the stone fruit harvest is completed the trees begin to shut down for the winter. In this period the leaves of the trees will begin to change color and shed.
  • This is not the case for the Apples & Persimmons, as the majority are harvested during the Autumn months.
  • Raeburn Orchards have been a pioneer in growing non-astringent Persimmon varieties in Western Australia.
  • Over the years we have developed our Persimmon production to a fine art.
  • Not only are the fruit sweet and delicious but the trees themselves are a spectacular sight during Autumn.
  • Whilst the flowers of Dahlia’s may well be incredible so is the autumn foliage, trees like the golden ash, claret ash, the stunning north American maples.
  • Quince, these beauties and we will be turning them into our favorite quince paste.
  • Quince trees are incredibly hardy and they love hot dry conditions. Growing them alongside Figs is smart as they have similar water demands.
  • It's been an odd year, the first flowering was late, the second unexpected but it means we will be picking these fruit of this epiphytic cactus a lot longer.
  • You can get red, purple like this or white and they are delicious.
  • One tree everyone should grow at home is the avocado.
  • Tamarillo is a savory fruit so it goes well with cheeses and biscuits.
  • Chinese Jujube or chinese date, the fruit can be eaten fresh but its best dried and consumed throughout the year
  • It’s a little different but quite delicious and it's quite easy to grow loving drier conditions and a bit of protection from extreme heat in my garden.
